Darko Bratina

Darko Bratina (Gorizia 1942 – Obernai 1997) was born on the border where three languages intertwine: Italian, Friulian, and Slovene.
Darko Bratina combined a scientific approach with intellectual passion. He was a "practical sociologist" and a "social engineer" who engaged with society, culture, and politics, distinguishing himself through concrete initiatives that he personally launched, supported, or realized.
He was a film enthusiast and expert, a social researcher, and a university professor of sociology—first in Turin, then in Trieste and Gorizia. As director of the Slovene Research Institute (SLORI) in Trieste, he actively contributed to innovation processes within the Slovene community in Italy and worked as a man of dialogue also within the broader regional context of Friuli Venezia Giulia and in relations with Slovenia. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, he closely followed developments in Eastern Europe, particularly in the Balkans. He was elected three times to the Italian Senate and represented the Italian Parliament in international institutions as well.

Darko Bratina on Cinema Vittoria
You are invited to watch the programme Mikser, broadcast on the Slovenian-language channel of the RAI Regional Headquarters for Friuli Venezia Giulia, which unveils the story of Cinema Vittoria, one of the oldest movie theatres in Gorizia. In 1996, when renovation works began, the creators produced this programme to preserve the memory of the cinema before it was transformed into today’s Kinemax.
In his recollections, Darko Bratina speaks about the many faces of this 18th-century building – from a piano shop to a hub of social life and film art. Noemi Rener and Igor Prinčič also reflect on its significance in the past and today.
The programme was created by Igor Devetak, Aleš Doktorič, Nadja Velušček, and Maša Tomadini from Kinoatelje, in collaboration with Martina Repinc (RAI).
